Welcome to our blog! We are Jules and Mark, another couple of crazy fools on bicycles, going wherever our wheels and the wind will take us. We started this blog mainly to keep our family and friends up to date with our travels, but if you happen to stumble upon it we hope you enjoy reading some of our stories, having a look through our photos or watching some of our videos. You can search for anything you’re interested in by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and typing into the search box or looking through our categories (mostly sorted by country). We have also tried to include some useful information on the logistics of cycle touring and travelling with bicycles.
In April 2014 we set off from home (Jules’ parents house in a little corner of the Chilterns, England) on our bicycles in the general direction of New Zealand. We followed the Rhine and the Danube across Europe, onto the Black Sea coast of Turkey towards Central Asia where we cycled the Pamir Highway, crossed into China, skipped down to South East Asia and after a brief stint in Australia we finally arrived in Auckland, 14 months later, ready for a new adventure. Phew. We landed ourselves with pretty cool jobs working as glacier guides at Fox Glacier on the ‘wet coast’ of the South Island. We are back on the bikes again after a year off, and plan to cycle from Alaska to Patagonia, with a bit of hitchbiking along the way.
My Granddad once described me as ‘a wanderer’ which I suppose is about right. I’m not very good at sitting still or staying in the same place for very long. I spend most of my time in the outdoors, on foot, climbing, by bike or on the water. I love exploring new places and going on adventures!
My nicknames have included ‘Mountain Goat’ and ‘Nature Girl’. Mark, on the other hand, is definitely a ‘Gadget Boy’. He will be in charge of everything electronic, probably including this blog, while I’m being distracted by pretty things.
I like being active and getting out and about, but I also enjoy a bit of quiet relaxation. I’m hoping that our bike ride will have a bit of both. I’ve only been on a couple of little tours before, but they’ve been fun and I’m looking forward to a nice long adventure, so long as we can take a few coffee stops along the way.
