Information for anyone planning on extending their visas in Lijiang. This information was correct on 3 December 2014.
It is very easy to extend your Chinese visa in Lijiang. Processing time is less than 2 working days, and very little paperwork is required.
Step 1: Register with the Lijiang Old Town Police Station. We couldn’t register at our hostel in Lijiang – it doesn’t seem to work. Registering takes about 15 minutes and is free. Make sure you have the address of the hostel/inn you’re staying at. The police should give you a registration receipt.
Step 2: Get an official Yunnan Province passport photo taken. You’ll need a physical copy and a receipt with a barcode for the police system. There’s a wedding photo shop on the north side of Kangzhong Lu, 3 blocks from the PSB, that will do it for 40Y and you get free tea while you wait.
Step 3: Head down to the PSB with your passport, photo barcode receipt, passport photo and registration receipt. It’s on Taihe St, just off Kangzhong Lu. You don’t need to leave your passport with them.
Step 4: Pick it up 2 days later. You need to have exactly 160Y.
Quite straightforward as visa extensions in China go. Though we know someone who extended their visa in Leshan a week ago and picked it up on the same day, so that’s still the place to go if convenient.
